Aloe vera

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Names: Aloe Vera, Medicinal Aloe, Barbados Aloe
Plant Type: Succulent perennial
Best For: Sunny windowsills, bright rooms and dry indoor spaces
Pet Friendly: No, toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.*
Available Size: 4" nursery pots

Aloe Vera is a familiar succulent known for its thick, fleshy leaves arranged in an upright rosette. Its blue-green to grey-green leaves store water, allowing the plant to withstand periods of dry soil and making it a relatively low-maintenance choice for bright indoor spaces.

Cultivated around the world for centuries, Aloe vera has a long history of human use and is now widely grown as both an ornamental and useful plant. Its exact native origin is uncertain after such a long history of cultivation, however its native range is widely thought be the Arabian Peninsula.

Care

Light: Bright light with some direct sun.
Water: Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.
Temperature: 18°C–27°C is a comfortable indoor range.
Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity and does not require additional humidity.
Bloom: Mature plants can produce tall flower stalks bearing yellow flowers, however it is uncommon.
Growth: Upright rosette of leaves and may produce offsets, or “pups,” around the base as it matures.
Maintenance: Grow in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Avoid allowing water to collect around the roots or centre of the rosette, and remove damaged or dried leaves as needed.

Plant appearance, bloom colour and size may vary.
Each plant is a living specimen and naturally unique.

* Aloe Vera is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It may cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. It is not generally considered among the highly life-threatening houseplants, but veterinary advice should be sought if ingestion occurs.
