Anthurium andraeanum

Family: Araceae
Common Names: Anthurium, Flamingo Flower, Flamingo Lily, Painter’s Palette
Plant Type: Tropical flowering perennial
Best For: Bright indoor spaces and colourful tabletop displays
Pet Friendly: No, toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.*
Available Size: 2" nursery pots, 2” shell pots, 3.5” ceramic pots

Anthuriums are tropical houseplants loved for their glossy, heart-shaped foliage and colourful, long-lasting blooms. What looks like a single waxy flower is actually a colourful modified leaf called a spathe surrounding a slender flower spike called a spadix.

Native to tropical northwestern South America, Anthurium andraeanum thrives in warm, humid environments with filtered light. With suitable indoor conditions, established plants can flower repeatedly throughout the year.

Care

Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid intense direct sun.
Water: Allow the upper soil to dry slightly between watering. Avoid soggy soil.
Temperature: Prefers 18°C–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity.
Bloom: Produces colourful, long-lasting spathes and may flower repeatedly indoors.
Growth: Compact and upright with glossy, heart-shaped leaves.
Maintenance: Remove spent blooms and damaged foliage as needed.

Plant appearance, bloom colour and size may vary.
Each plant is a living specimen and naturally unique.

*Anthurium is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause immediate burning and irritation of the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. This type of poisoning is generally irritating rather than highly life-threatening, but seek veterinary care promptly if ingestion occurs or immediately if your pet has difficulty swallowing or breathing.
