Schlumbergera sp.
Family: Cactaceae
Common Names: Christmas Cactus, Holiday Cactus, Zygocactus
Plant Type: Tropical epiphytic cactus
Best For: Bright indoor spaces, shelves and seasonal displays
Pet Friendly: Yes, generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.*
Available Size: 2" nursery pots, 6” hanging baskets
Christmas Cactus is a popular flowering houseplant known for its arching, segmented stems and colourful blooms that typically appear during the shorter days of fall and winter. Flowers may be pink, red, white, orange, purple or combinations of these colours.
Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera originates in humid forests of southeastern Brazil, where its ancestors grow on trees and rocks. Its unusual growing habit means it appreciates more regular moisture and less intense sunlight than a typical cactus.
Care
Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid intense direct afternoon sun.
Water: Water when the upper soil begins to dry. Avoid allowing the soil to remain soggy.
Temperature: Prefers 18°C–24°C. Cooler nights can help encourage bud formation.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity.
Bloom: Produces colourful flowers, typically during fall and winter.
Growth: Arching and cascading with flattened, segmented stems.
Maintenance: Remove spent blooms and prune lightly after flowering if needed.
Plant appearance, bloom colour and size may vary.
Each plant is a living specimen and naturally unique.
* Christmas Cactus is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Eating larger amounts may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. It is not considered a potentially fatal plant. Contact your veterinarian if you have concerns about your pet.
