Olea europaea

Family: Oleaceae
Common Names: Olive, Olive Tree, European Olive
Plant Type: Evergreen tree
Best For: Sunny windows, patios and container growing
Pet Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, however it is unknown.*
Available Size: 4" nursery pots

Olive trees bring a touch of the Mediterranean to the home with their slender, silvery-green leaves and graceful branching habit. Naturally slow growing and well suited to pruning, they can make beautiful long-lived container plants when provided with plenty of sunlight and excellent drainage.

Olea europaea is native to the Mediterranean region, extending into parts of Africa and Asia, and has been cultivated for thousands of years. In Northern Alberta, olive trees are best enjoyed outdoors during the warm summer months and brought inside before temperatures approach freezing.

Care

Light: Outdoors, full sun. Indoors, ideally a sunny spot with several hours of direct sunlight each day.
Water: Allow the upper portion of the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid consistently wet soil.
Temperature: Approximately 15°C–27°C, container-grown plants should be protected from hard frost.
Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity and generally does well in typical household conditions.
Bloom: Produce clusters of small white flowers followed by olives. Fruiting indoors is uncommon.
Growth: Naturally develops into a woody evergreen tree but responds well to pruning.
Maintenance: Excellent drainage and abundant light are especially important. Prune as needed to maintain shape and repot when the plant becomes root-bound.

Plant appearance, bloom colour and size may vary.
Each plant is a living specimen and naturally unique.

* Reliable veterinary toxicology information specific to ingestion of the Olive Tree (Olea europaea) is limited. Keep out of reach of pets and contact your veterinarian if a significant amount is ingested.
