How Gardens Become Ecosystems
When people think about gardening, they often think about flowers. The bright colours, the blooms, the pollinators buzzing from blossom to blossom. Flowers are beautiful, but they're also something much more important. They are part of a complex web of relationships that connects plants, insects, birds, wildlife, farms, and communities.
At The Marigold Market, you'll often hear us talk about flowers, native plants, pollinators, birds, conservation, and green spaces. At first glance, these topics may seem unrelated. After all, what does a chickadee have to do with a wildflower? What does a pollinator garden have to do with agriculture?
The answer lies in understanding how ecosystems work. Nature doesn't exist in separate categories. Everything is connected.
Understanding the Ecosystem
When we think about nature, it's easy to view things separately. Flowers are flowers. Birds are birds. Bees are bees.
In reality, nature doesn't work in isolated pieces. Every plant, insect, animal, fungus, and microorganism is part of a larger system known as an ecosystem.
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with one another and with their physical environment. These relationships can be incredibly complex. A native wildflower may provide nectar for a bee. That bee helps pollinate the plant so it can produce seeds. The plant may also host caterpillars, which become food for nesting birds. Those birds help disperse seeds and contribute to the health of the surrounding habitat.
Together, these relationships form what scientists call a food web. This is a network of connections that allows energy and nutrients to move throughout an ecosystem.
Unlike a simple food chain, which follows a single path from one organism to another, a food web recognizes that most species are connected to many others. Remove one piece, and the effects can ripple throughout the system.
This is why biodiversity matters. Healthy ecosystems contain a wide variety of plants, insects, birds, mammals, fungi, and microorganisms. The more diverse and connected an ecosystem is, the more resilient it becomes in the face of challenges such as drought, disease, invasive species, and habitat loss.
This may make ecosystems seem incredibly complex, but we can simplify the concept into a basic flow:
Sun → Plants → Insects → Birds → Healthy Ecosystems → Healthy Farms & Communities
At first glance, it may seem surprising that something as simple as a flower garden could be connected to agriculture, wildlife conservation, and even community well-being. But every step in this chain supports the next.
The sun provides energy for plants. Plants provide food and habitat for insects. Insects support birds and other wildlife. Together, these relationships create healthy, resilient ecosystems that benefit both people and nature.
Of course, nature is rarely this simple and as stated, ecosystems are not straight lines, they're webs. Pollinators rely on flowers, birds rely on insects, plants rely on pollinators, and healthy soils support everything above them.
Whether we're planting a pollinator garden, restoring native habitat, managing farmland, or simply growing flowers for fun in our backyard, we're participating in these larger ecological relationships.
To better understand how these connections work, let's take a closer look at some of the key building blocks that help keep ecosystems healthy and functioning.
Plants: The Foundation of the Food Web
Every ecosystem begins with plants.
Unlike animals, plants can produce their own food using sunlight through a process known as photosynthesis. This ability makes them what ecologists call primary producers. These are organisms that convert solar energy into a form that other living things can use.
Nearly every animal on Earth depends on plants either directly or indirectly. Herbivores eat plants, predators eat herbivores, and decomposers break down plant material to return nutrients to the soil.
Plants also provide shelter, nesting sites, erosion control, water filtration, and carbon storage. In many ways, they form the physical and biological foundation of terrestrial ecosystems.
Without healthy plant communities, the rest of the food web cannot exist.
Pollinators: Nature's Matchmakers
Roughly 90% of flowering plant species depend on animal pollinators for reproduction.
As bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and other pollinators move between flowers searching for nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen from one plant to another. This allows plants to produce seeds and fruit, ensuring future generations can grow.
This process extends far beyond wildflowers. Many fruits, vegetables, oilseeds, and forage crops benefit from pollination services.
Pollinators are often called a "keystone group" because their work supports entire ecosystems. Without successful pollination, plant diversity declines, reducing food and habitat for countless other species.
Native Plants: Supporting Local Biodiversity
Not all plants contribute equally to an ecosystem.
Native plants evolved alongside local wildlife over thousands of years, creating highly specialized relationships. Many insects rely on specific native plants as host species for their larvae and cannot complete their life cycles without them.
For example, while a non-native ornamental plant may provide nectar, it may support very few local insects. A native plant, on the other hand, may support dozens or even hundreds of species.
Research has repeatedly shown that landscapes containing more native plants support greater biodiversity, including higher numbers of insects, birds, and other wildlife.
Native plants do not just beautify a landscape, they help sustain the ecological relationships that make healthy ecosystems possible.
Insects: The Heavy Lifters
Insects are often overlooked, yet they perform some of the most important jobs in nature!
They pollinate plants, recycle nutrients, decompose organic matter, aerate soil, control pest populations, and provide food for countless species.
Perhaps most importantly, insects act as a bridge between plants and larger animals.
When insects feed on plants, they convert plant energy into a form that birds, amphibians, mammals, and other wildlife can use. Ecologists often describe insects as a critical link in the transfer of energy throughout the food web.
Without healthy insect populations, many other species struggle to survive.
Birds: Indicators of Ecosystem Health
Birds occupy many roles within an ecosystem.
Some disperse seeds. Others pollinate plants. Many help regulate insect populations. Because birds are highly mobile and sensitive to environmental change, they are often used by scientists as indicators of ecosystem health.
A landscape that supports diverse bird populations is usually providing food, shelter, nesting habitat, and clean water.
One particularly fascinating connection exists between birds and insects. While many adult songbirds eat seeds, fruits, or nectar, most feed their young almost exclusively on insects. A single nest of chickadees, for example, may require thousands of caterpillars before the young birds are ready to leave the nest.
This means that healthy bird populations often depend on healthy insect populations, which in turn depend on healthy plant communities.
When birds thrive, it is often a sign that the broader ecosystem is functioning as it should.
Why These Connections Matter
Understanding how ecosystems function isn't just an academic exercise. The relationships between plants, pollinators, insects, birds, and biodiversity have real-world impacts on the landscapes we live in and the communities we call home.
From productive farms to healthy neighbourhoods, many of the benefits people rely on every day are connected to the health of the ecosystems around them.
Agriculture: What This Means for Farms
Conservation and agriculture are often portrayed as opposing interests.
In reality, healthy agricultural systems depend on many of the same ecological processes that support wildlife.
Pollinators contribute to crop production. Beneficial insects can help manage pests. Healthy soils support productive crops. Diverse landscapes often prove more resilient to environmental stress.
Across North America, many farmers are incorporating pollinator strips, windbreaks, native plantings, and wildlife habitat into working agricultural landscapes. These practices can support biodiversity while also strengthening long-term agricultural sustainability.
Healthy ecosystems and healthy farms are not separate goals. They are deeply connected.
Communities: Why Green Spaces Matter
The benefits of healthy ecosystems extend beyond wildlife and agriculture.
Green spaces provide places for people to gather, learn, explore, and connect with nature. Research has linked access to green spaces with improvements in mental well-being, physical health, community connection, and environmental stewardship.
A community garden, pollinator patch, walking trail, native meadow, or urban park can support both ecological health and human well-being.
When people experience nature firsthand, they are often more motivated to care for and protect it. In this way, green spaces do more than support biodiversity, they help build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities!
Looking Beyond the Garden
At first glance, a garden may seem like a small thing: a patch of flowers, a few native plants, a bird feeder, a vegetable bed tucked into a backyard. But healthy ecosystems are built from countless small actions like these.
Every native plant added to a landscape creates habitat. Every pollinator-friendly flower provides a food source. Every green space, no matter its size, contributes to a larger network of life that supports biodiversity, agriculture, and human well-being.
The challenges facing our natural world can feel overwhelming. Habitat loss, declining biodiversity, invasive species, and climate change are complex issues without simple solutions. Yet many meaningful conservation efforts begin at a local scale: in our gardens, our communities, our farms, and the spaces we choose to steward.
This is why we believe gardening can be about more than growing plants! It can be about creating habitat, supporting pollinators and wildlife, strengthening communities and fostering connections with nature, a most importantly, it can be about recognizing that we are part of the ecosystem too.
Flowers may be where the story begins, but they are only one part of a much larger web of relationships that connects plants, wildlife, farms, communities, and people.
When we understand those connections, we can make choices that help both nature and ourselves thrive.
